- Description
- If Brady and Meany are correct in treating search engines as active agents similar in effect to humans, then what we need to recognize from this, and the other evidence presented in this book, is the idea that that the fifth estate is not simply an extension of the fourth estate, just as the fourth was not simply an extension of the other three. As a locus of power, this new incarnation of the estates is different enough from the others to be seen as something that is novel and valued in its own right. As William Dutton has written,a new institution has emerged "with some characteristics similar to the Fourth Estate but with sufficiently distinctive and important features to warrant its recognition as a new Fifth Estate" (2009, 2).
